Search for fallen paraglider proves fruitless

EAGLE RIVER -- A report of a paraglider who fell from the sky in Eagle River this afternoon spurred an intensive search, but would-be rescuers ended their efforts without finding a sign of the person, according to Anchorage police.

Witnesses reported seeing an orange and red parachute descending Mount Baldy off Fire Creek Trail just before 3:30 p.m., when about halfway down the chute folded in on itself, causing the person to plunge to the ground, police said.

But rescue personnel searching by land and air could not find any sign of the person and didn't even have a firm location to begin searching, police Lt. Dave Parker said.

The person may have been fine and able to walk away, he said.
